Cameras

Introduction

This article provides a list of cameras recommended to be used with Toradex hardware. It also presents the available interfaces for connecting cameras.

The full list of cameras tested on Toradex hardware is available on the Peripheral Database.

To understand cameras integration on Toradex hardware from the software perspective (libraries and frameworks), see Cameras on Toradex System on Modules.

Camera Interfaces

MIPI CSI-2

The availability of the MIPI CSI-2 interface varies among the different module families, as follows:

  • Verdin module family: Provides one quad-lane MIPI CSI-2 interface on reserved pins, according to the Verdin Family Specification. That means whenever the SoC of a Verdin SoM has a MIPI CSI-2 interface, Toradex will expose it on fixed pins.
  • Apalis module family: Provides MIPI CSI-2 interfaces on module-specific pins. That means this interface is not guaranteed to be exposed on the same pins across different SoCs of the Apalis family.
  • Colibri module family: Does not provide MIPI-CSI interfaces. However, some SoMs, such as the Colibri iMX8X, feature a MIPI CSI-2 interface exposed through an additional FFC connector.

The recommended camera to be used with Toradex Modules for an easier out-of-the-box experience is the CSI Camera Set 5MP AR0521 Color. Support is not available for all modules and all software releases. For more information, see the Compatible Products section.

Check out available cameras in the Camera Partners section, as well as other cameras that have been reported working at least once in our camera database.

Other Interfaces

  • USB: The USB 2.0 Host interface is available on all the modules to connect USB Cameras, while the USB 3.0 interface is only available on specific modules from the Apalis SoM Family and the Verdin SoM Family. Check the particular datasheets for further details.
  • Ethernet: All Toradex modules have native Ethernet support. The Colibri family of SoMs supports 10/100Mbit ethernet, while the Apalis and Verdin families support up to 1Gbit, enabling the use of GIGE cameras. Most IP cameras support MJPEG or H264 encoded video streams via RTSP.
  • Parallel Interface: Various Toradex modules support the parallel camera interface. Always consult the datasheet to confirm that an interface is available.
  • Analog Interface: Toradex SoMs do not natively support analog camera interface, but you can use the Analogue Camera Adapter to connect 4x analog cameras, switching data to read one camera at a time.
